A marketing director resume is your campaign for employment. You know as well as anyone what a great marketing push can do for a product or service. When you search for a job, you are that product. Just as a marketing campaign that just mails it in can doom a product, so, too, can a lackluster resume. A great resume will amplify your chances of getting the interview you want.

How can a marketing director resume do that? By sparking curiosity with action, achievement, and a clear message!

As a marketing director, it’s your job to oversee the image of a product and ensure viewers receive the message you’re trying to send. That first impression is all-important. A false step could leave a lasting bad impression that’s difficult to reverse. Don’t misdirect your marketing talent when it counts most. Hook them from the beginning with a marketing director resume that makes them say, “Wow!”

How to write a marketing director resume

Before we get to the creative side, you need to know the non-negotiables. Your marketing director resume should contain the following elements:

In a marketing campaign, you may have more than one opportunity to sell your products. In a marketing director resume, you get only one chance to sell yourself as the right person for the job. The key is to know your audience. Learn all you can about the company or agency, how it markets itself and its brands now, and what message is most likely to resonate. Then, sell them on how your unique talents and abilities will elevate their marketing department.

A great marketing director resume flows from the ideas below:

  • Highlight career achievements. A listing of your job responsibilities won’t get you very far. Instead, in each section of your resume, tell the hiring manager about your successful campaigns, how you manage your team to prompt a collaborative working environment, or how you won over a client.
  • Target your audience! It’s doubtful that you create only one marketing campaign for every medium and demographic. Alter the tone and style of your resume to send a personalized message to each company.
  • Use a resume template that reflects your professional image without tilting too far into your creative side of overcompensating by getting stuffy.
  • Account for the ATS filtering system in your online applications by filling in important keywords and phrases from the job listing.
Expert tip

Create an ATS-friendly resume

The ATS, or Applicant Tracking System, is an HR tool designed to scan and rank resumes. It uses algorithms to count keywords, phrases, and other information pegged to the job to do so. Those that don’t make the cut, will sit untouched in the system or be deleted completely. It’s not so different from SEO.

To boost your chances, if the marketing director job ad seeks:

  • “Seven years of experience”
  • “Understanding of the soft drink market”
  • “Proficiency in data analysis”
  • “Expert in Agile marketing implementation”
  • “Excellent leader”

Your summary can incorporate that like this:

“Marketing director with 10+ years of experience. Oversaw marketing department for niche soft drink manufacturer using Agile marketing to expand market share by 5% a year over my three-year tenure. Proficient in data analysis to finely tune digital marketing campaigns and raise brand awareness. Established open lines of communication to foster collaboration and professional growth.”

Choosing the right resume format for a marketing director

A marketing campaign needs  a clear message, relayed concisely; so does a great marketing director resume.

The best format in which to structure that message is reverse chronological order, which best highlights your work history so that you can tell the story of your career growth beginning from your most recent position and working your way backwards.

If you’re shifting from an advertising director position into marketing, or making another lateral move, you may consider alternative formats, such as a functional format. This format expands the space for your skills section where you can highlight aspects of your current role that will serve your employer in you new career.

Our resume builder is stocked with dozens of designs. Select the format that works best to deliver your career highlights. To get a better idea of how the three formats look, check out our resume examples.

Blend professionalism with creativity in your resume design by customizing one of our modern layouts

Include your contact information

What’s the point of a digital marketing campaign if the audience can’t click on a link and immediately be taken to your company’s landing page? The header of your resume acts as the web link in your resume. You don’t want to miss the impulse to contact you.

Present all your contact information in an eye-catching but easy-to-read format. Keep all your details professional.

  • Full name and title. List your first and last name. Your title should match the one on the job you are applying for.
  • Professional email address. Use a clean format like [email protected]. This is not the place to try to be memorable with a clever email address.
  • Phone number. List a number where you can be readily contacted, with a professional voicemail greeting.
  • Location. Only your city and state are necessary. Don’t list street address or zip code since that personal information could get into the wrong hands. If you’re willing to move, note that here.
  • LinkedIn. If your LinkedIn profile is active, relevant, and shows your business network, include it here.
  • Portfolio. If you have a portfolio of your marketing work, add the URL here. Our resume builder allows you to link directly to your portfolio from your resume.

Make use of a summary

Engaging marketing copy gets right to the point with a summary aimed at capturing the attention of prospects. You want them to remember what you’re selling. Within those first few words or phrases, you’re broadcasting the message that your brand offers something special.

The marketing director summary for a resume serves the same purpose. You’re illustrating to the hiring manager that you can boost brand awareness and click-throughs or develop young talent (or whatever it is you know they’re looking for) better than any other candidate. A memorable summary, in 2-3 sentences, elicits the response, “Yes! That’s the person we want.”

Apply your writing talents here by introducing your successes with action words such as boosted, created, mentored, optimized, influenced or analyzed. Then, explain the results of your actions with data and details whenever possible.

The summary distills your career into its dynamic essence. Who are you as a marketer? As a director? What is your style and vision? How do you approach your work? A repetition of the accomplishments within your employment history section is a waste of space and doesn’t illustrate your overarching value.

This sentence tells the hiring manager how you perceive yourself and your career and illustrates to them your style and value: “Dynamic marketing director with eye toward the next social media trend excels at leading strategic initiatives and fostering innovation in brand development, digital marketing, and market expansion.”

Outline your marketing director work experience: communicate value

Start with where you are now (or where you’ve been most recently) and work your way back through your career, showing a pattern of growth and increased responsibility. If you’ve been at it for more than 10-15 years, there’s no need to include those first few jobs.

Under each employer and position, create a compelling list of achievements (not tasks) beginning with an action verb—drove, directed, executed, generated, promoted, positioned—and following up with your accomplishment. The employment history section of your marketing director resume should present the story of your career in a logical fashion.

These bland descriptions are unlikely to generate a lead to your next job:

  • Led marketing team
  • Used Agile marketing strategies
  • Analyzed data
  • Maintained stakeholder relationships

Can you picture the writer of these items dynamically leading a multifaceted marketing department? Generic job descriptions fall flat because they don’t demonstrate your value add. Instead, try quantifying your achievements and adding details. The hiring manager wants to know the results of your marketing strategies or what you led the marketing team to achieve. For example:

  • Led multidisciplinary team in launching six home improvement product lines increasing market penetration and achieving 30% growth in market share.
  • Implemented Agile marketing strategies to realize 25% increase in sales revenue within the first year of tenure.
  • Analyzed data and leveraged results to better target consumer desires and increase conversion rates by 20%.
  • Communicated regularly with vendors, agencies, and industry partners, maximizing brand exposure.

Include the relevant key skills that make you a great marketing director

Your marketing director resume skills list showcases what you believe are the key attributes that make you excellent at your job. Hiring managers may look here first, because if you don’t have what they’re looking for, they can move on without reading further.

A carefully curated listing combines the hard and soft skills that take your marketing abilities from average to excellent. Hard skills such as data and analytics, search engine optimization (SEO), project management, and strategic marketing and planning can set you apart from other candidates.

But marketing directors need an understanding of human behavior and management abilities as well. Hiring managers will be looking for soft skills like sales, communication, knowledge of your industry, and leadership and cross-functional collaboration.

Choose from the pre-written skills in our resume builder or write in your own skills. Either way, you can include your proficiency levels in your skills box.

Here’s what the skills box looks like in our marketing director resume template.

Key Skills and Proficiencies

Marketing
Marketing Strategies
Training
Innovative
Coordination
Communication

The message of your resume should be “Look at all the skills I use to add value to my employer!” Demonstrate those skills throughout your resume, not just in the skills section. Listing a skill without any follow-up in the rest of your resume may do more harm than good. It may leave the hiring manager wondering whether you value the skill or how you apply it.

Infuse skills into your work history and summary by highlighting your

  • Data-driven decision-making by quantifying the data you used and how it improved your marketing decisions
  • Creativity and innovation by describing in detail how you created a narrative for a new product and developed a multi-pronged campaign to support it
  • Persuasiveness and relationship building by relating a time when you were able to convince a major retailer to promote your product in its stores through your networking abilities.

The job listing will help you decide which skills to emphasize throughout your resume.

Expert tip

Check your tone

Just as each brand has an image and all marketing collateral must project that image, be aware of the image you are projecting. Use a tone that shows confidence and professionalism without stepping over the line into conceit.

Detail your education & relevant marketing director certifications

The education section of your marketing director resume details your academic degrees in a straightforward format. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or a related field.

If you have an MBA or other advanced degree, leave out your high school experience. List your degrees in reverse chronological order.

There’s no need to list your GPA no matter how good it was. Your work experience speaks for itself.

Other educational experiences, such as advanced training, also belong here. For example:

  • Training and certifications. Any classes, workshops, webinars, or certifications such as the Professional Certified Marketer that add to your skills or knowledge of marketing belong here.
  • Professional memberships. You’re part salesperson, so any professional organizations such as the American Marketing Association demonstrate that you’re networking with others to extend your reach.

Pick the right resume layout and design for a marketing director resume

Before you present a new product or campaign, your team makes myriad decisions about color, style, font combinations and the overall image they project. Every element that goes into the design can change the impression prospects will get.

Take the same care with your marketing director resume. Your goal is to get the attention of the hiring manager by providing a visual representation of who you are as a marketing director. While you want a visually striking display, it must also be professional, easy to read and clean.

Depending on your industry, you may want to aim for a younger, fresher look than is typical for professionals at your level so present your creativity. Adding color or varying type size or fonts (while keeping them legible) can get you there without sacrificing clarity. However, if you’re the marketing director in a more traditional industry, reign in your innovative design work a bit to stay in alignment with the company culture.

While creating a dynamic and interview-worthy resume is no five-minute job, our field-tested resume templates can lift you out of the tedium of formatting and let you focus on more quickly creating the perfect marketing content to get you that interview.
